Roger Federer claimed his 18th and arguably sweetest Grand Slam title on Sunday, by defeating old foe Rafael Nadal in five sets at the 2017 Australian Open.

The 35-year-old won his first major since 2012 after overcoming the Spaniard 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 6-3 in an enthralling five-set encounter that took three hours and 38 minutes.

The match-up was a throwback to when both players were in their peak and brought back memories of their epic meeting at Wimbledon in 2008.

This was a tournament where Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic – the new generation of leading players – were expected to dominate, but it showed that Federer and Nadal still offer a threat for the sport’s major prizes.
