Mauricio Pellegrino has failed to complete his first season in England as manager after being sacked by Southampton.

The Premier League club have acted with eight games to go as they are just a point and one position above the relegation zone.

Pellegrino took charge last June and Southampton have struggled under his direction, with just one win in their last 17 matches – the 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United last weekend was the final straw for the Argentine.

This is the closest that the club have been to relegation since being promoted from the Championship in 2012, with their lowest finish previously 14th.

It remains to be seen how much of an impact a new manager could have in the remainder of the campaign, but Mark Hughes has already been linked with the vacancy.

The Saints play Wigan Athletic on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
