In this inter-conference MLS match, New York City FC host Seattle Sounders in what is battle of two in-form sides. In the Eastern Conference, City are in third place after 15 games, and three points off the top-two place that would allow them to get an automatic play-off semi-final berth at the end of the campaign. Given that that is where they were knocked out in 2016 – having finished second in the regular season – progress could be claimed if they at least reach the finals.

They do, of course, boast David Villa, who is still arguably the division’s finest player. On top of that Andrea Pirlo is now in his third MLS season, so the club certainly have the pedigree to challenge for the Cup.

Standing in their way, though, are the holders. The Sounders finished fourth in the Western Conference last season before beating Sporting Kansas City, FC Dallas, Colorado Rapids, and finally Toronto FC – on penalties – to claim their first ever MLS Cup.  As it stands, they will reach the knockout round, though they are only in sixth – the final position – thanks to having scored more goals. There is only one point separating fifth and eighth, so a lack of consistency – with six draws and five wins – could cost them at the end of the campaign. There are still 19 matchdays to go, however.
