The French football season begins this weekend with the Trophée des Champions taking place between Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain and runners-up Monaco, due to the club from the capital completing a clean sweep of all three domestic trophies.

Much has changed since the end of 2017/18, with the country’s national team becoming world champions for a second time and Thomas Tuchel being named the manager of the Parisians, taking charge in place of Unai Emery, who joined Arsenal having failed to make an impact in the Champions League. Europe’s elite competition is also how Tuchel will be judged, though he will still need to dominate the domestic competitions if he is to satisfy the demanding owners – starting with the Super Cup on Saturday.

The German will have more of his squad to choose from after a disrupted pre-season International Champions Cup tour which saw a number of his star players missing and included losses to both Bayern Munich and Arsenal. Angel Di Maria and Neymar could both make appearances, though French forward Kylian Mbappe will not feature against his former club.

Monaco have invested heavily in their squad as they look to win the Ligue 1 trophy back off PSG, with Aleksandr Golovin – who was outstanding for Russia at the World Cup – their star addition, joining six other senior players. Leonardo Jardim won the league in 2017 with the club from the principality, and victory on Saturday would represent his second piece of silverware as well as boding well for the new campaign.

There are 93 markets to bet on at, with PSG considered highly likely to win in normal time (1.70) given their dominant recent head-to-head record. Their opponents are at 4.50, in contrast, though given the attacking quality on show it is just 1.50 that both will find the net at any point. There are plenty of other markets to choose from, as well as betting options for the opening Ligue 1 weekend.
