This year’s UEFA Super Cup – the game between the Champions League and Europa League holders – is taking place at the Lilleküla Stadium in Tallinn, Estonia’s capital city. It is a Madrid derby between Real and Atletico and should be an excellent spectacle as well as giving both teams their final preparations before La Liga begins this weekend.
The match is a re-run of the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals, with Los Blancos coming out on top on both occasions. In addition, Julen Lopetegui has the opportunity to win his first piece of silverware having replaced Zinedine Zidane in the summer; his side can also draw level with Barcelona by winning the Super Cup for a record fifth time, while they have claimed three of the past four editions.
Atletico, meanwhile, have a 100% record and have won the trophy twice, in 2010 and 2012. Wednesday night kicks-off an important season for Diego Simeone and his squad as they look to win a second La Liga title. They have spent big over the summer so far, with Thomas Lemar their standout addition, though keeping hold of Antoine Griezmann and Jan Oblak is arguably equally as important.
Los Rojiblancos were runners-up in Spain last season, but despite their new signings they are going to struggle to challenge Real and Barcelona for top spot according to Tipbet.com’s season bets – Atletico are third favourites at 8.00, behind Barca (1.60) and Real (2.20).
Interestingly, Wednesday night could see Thibaut Courtois make his debut having arrived from Chelsea last week. The Belgian had an outstanding World Cup with his country finishing in third place and, though Keylor Navas has won 10 trophies since arriving in 2014, represents a major upgrade for the Champions League holders.
As with both major European club competitions throughout the season, Tipbet.com is the place to bet on this Super Cup game. There are a whopping 145 markets to choose from, and picking a match winner is not straightforward. Real are marginal favourites at 2.45 to get the win in 90 minutes, as they did against Manchester United last year.
Atletico, meanwhile, are offered at 2.95, with both sides scoring at 1.85. Other intriguing bets to place include which half will be the highest scoring.
