Oh, how the mighty have fallen! Both clubs celebrated league championships this side of the year 2000. But for the last few years they found themselves far more often than not involved in the relegation struggle. This year is no exception! And now they collide deep into the season ... and the relegation struggle: It's Werder Bremen vs. VfB Stuttgart!
Can Werder Bremen crawl out of the relegation struggle?
Werder Bremen hit rock bottom hart once again. Last week they suffered an unfortunate defeat at the hands of their long time local rival Hamburger SV. Now they have three games left to make it out of the last three, to safely remain in the Bundesliga. And even though they have proven to be capable of beating name opposition during this season, what plagues them is their weak defense. With 63 goals against them they have the weakest defense in the entire Bundesliga. Well, alongside Stuttgart, who are every bit as bad. The one thing that Bremen may have going for them, is that their latest form is somewhat better. Especially as far as scoring goals goes. In their last five league games, Bremen scored eight goals and collected four points, whereas Stuttgart only scored three goals and collected one lousy point. Of most value for Werder Bremen would be a sharp Claudio Pizarro. The Bundesliga veteran has scored 13 goals this season.
Stuttgart would be good advised to win this one
With Wolfsburg and Mainz being the remaining two opponents in this season, Stuttgart would be good advised to go for the three points in this game. But do they have the tools? As suspect as Bremen's defense may be, so is Stuttgart's. And no team has scored less in the Bundesliga lately than Stuttgart. They only managed to win one of their last ten Bundesliga games. Another problem is their affinity to lose. Only six times it was at least enough for a draw in this season. But they lost a whopping 16 times and won 9 times! So it is a clear hit and miss with the VfB Stuttgart (with much more miss than hit). If they want to win in Bremen, they need to dig down deep and keep the pressure on. Going against is arguably their away weakness. In the last five away games, only a humble three points were collected.
This is what the odds at Tipbet look like:
Tipbet clearly sides with Bremen as the home team, which is kinda hard to argue against. The odds are 1.95 – 3.80 – 3.35. It is tough though, to favor anybody here with confidence. Especially considering how bad Stuttgart struggled lately, it is hard to see them emerge as the winners. But with both defenses being so weak, maybe an over bet of over 3.5 (odds 2.05) would make sense.
