Having claimed the last two editions of the Audi Cup tournament – which is hosted at their Allianz Arena stadium – Bayern Munich must beat Liverpool to advance to tomorrow’s final. With all matches back-to-back and taking place over two days, the pre-season competition acts as a useful preparation for the domestic matches which begin in the next fortnight.

Since the first edition in 2009, Munich have always been finalists, though after a mixed International Champions Cup campaign, Carlo Ancelotti’s men will need to improve to make it three Audi Cups in a row. They lost to Arsenal (on penalties), Milan and Inter, and only beat Chelsea while on tour in the Far East.

This is despite the arrival of James Rodriguez from Real Madrid as their standout addition, though Carlo Ancelotti will know that, despite the preference to of course beat their top-level opponents in pre-season, results are irrelevant until this Saturday when the Bavarians face Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup after the Yellows knocked them out of the DFB-Pokal in the semi-finals and then beat Eintracht Frankfurt in the final. Also, with a third-place play-off taking place at the Allianz on Wednesday, Munich are guaranteed two matches either way so should be prepared for Saturday in strong condition.

Liverpool have mainly felt frustration in their transfer pursuits so far this summer. Though they have signed former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah from Roma, the Reds have been thwarted in their attempts to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, and Naby Keita from RB Leipzig. After only being able to finish fourth last season without any European football, it is hard to see them being able to challenge higher up the Premier League without significant additions before 31st August, though playing away to Bayern is the ultimate acid test of their abilities.

With a penalty shootout a possibility to separate them after 90 minutes, a draw is offered at 4.20 by Tipbet, though Munich are favourites at 1.55 to win. Liverpool can be backed at 4.85 to get a victory that would see them into tomorrow’s final of the Audi Cup against Napoli or Atletico Madrid.
