Chelsea are playing on Monday night in the Premier League once more and they will be eager to improve on last week’s embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Watford. That humbling result has left them outside of the top four and only a win at Stamford Bridge against West Bromwich Albion will ensure that they enter matchday 28 ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.

Luckily for the Blues, West Brom are rock bottom of the league with just 20 points and there could be few better opponents for the champions to face when they are so short of confidence themselves at this critical stage of the campaign.

Antonio Conte appears unlikely to be in charge at Chelsea next season, but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to last until the end of this one, particularly with a crucial Champions League tie against Barcelona taking place next week. Anything but a win on Monday night at Stamford Bridge could just quicken his departure, therefore.

Before last week’s match at Vicarage Road, the Premier League champions lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth as well as being eliminated from the League Cup at the semi-final stage to make winning any silverware now look an uphill task.

The Baggies, meanwhile, are seven points from safety having won just three times all season. Apart from last week’s defeat to fellow strugglers Southampton, there have been signs of improvement under Alan Pardew and there are some very important fixtures in the coming weeks.

Given Chelsea’s vulnerabilities, Pardew will feel that his side can take advantage and claim at least a point in west London. Having conceded six times in their last two games, though, a much more disciplined display is required.
