After a wholly disappointing season, Borussia Dortmund now have the chance to end it on a high in the DFB-Pokal final when they face Eintracht Frankfurt at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. This is an opportunity for Thomas Tuchel to finally win his first major trophy, and it could go some way to securing his own future, after months of rumours of fallings-out with senior figures, and speculation linking him with replacing Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.
Despite being the most obvious challengers to Bayern Munich’s dominance, a sustained title bid never got off the ground. In spite of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s sensational form, with 39 goals, including 31 in the league, BVB have been nowhere near consistent enough and finished below RB Leipzig – the club playing their first ever top-flight German season.
The cup has been something of a release, though, and Tuchel masterminded a 3-2 win over Munich in the semi-finals. Eintracht overcame Borussia Monchengladbach on penalties to book their place in the capital and that tops what has been a hugely satisfying campaign. In 15/16, they only stopped relegation to the 2. Bundesliga via a play-off, but were much more consistent this time around to secure an 11th place, mid-table berth.
Scoring goals has been their main problem and they have averaged around one a game. Indeed, it has been a strong defensive record, with the best from their position downwards, that has kept them in a respectable part of the league standings. One defender that will not get to play in the final, however, is Guillermo Varela - the Uruguayan, on loan from Manchester United, got a tattoo without his club’s permission, which then became infected. After making just 10 appearances, the 24-year-old will now return to Manchester.
