The 2018 DFL-Supercup takes place this Sunday and it pits together Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt, who surprisingly beat them in May’s DFB-Pokal final. Nico Kovac is in the opposite dugout having beaten Bayern in that game, and he will be eager to claim a first piece of silverware at his new club.

Bayern will, of course, have eyes on bigger prizes, and their first competitive match is on 24th August against Hoffenheim in the league. Pre-season has been mixed for the Bavarians, with the International Champions Cup seeing two defeats and a single win, though their 1-0 victory over Manchester United last week was one of complete control and dominance.

The Super Cup is taking place at Eintracht’s home stadium, the Commerzbank-Arena, and Munich have real pedigree in the match having won six times including in the past two seasons, while they have also featured six consecutive times due to their Bundesliga dominance. Since 2013, though, Borussia Dortmund (twice) and Wolfsburg have beaten them to the season’s first trophy, so Frankfurt will feel they have a chance of overcoming the odds in a cup final again.

Adi Hütter is Kovac’s replacement and Sunday is the ideal opportunity for his men to improve on their disappointing pre-season results as they get used to his coaching methods. Die Adler lost to Serie A sides Empoli and SPAL in the past week and have won just once since May.
