The club football season has ended, and players and fans alike are now looking ahead to the 2018 World Cup in Russia. With a month’s break between the two, it is the perfect time to take stock and assess the seasons of the five clubs that are sponsored by Tipbet.

Fortuna Düsseldorf

The German club had an exceptional campaign in 2017/18 and were top of the 2. Bundesliga table for large parts of it. Fortuna Düsseldorf ultimately ended the season as title winners following a thrilling conclusion to their fixtures, with a 3-2 win over FC Nürnberg on the final day enough to secure the trophy at the expense of their opponents.

Friedhelm Funkel (pictured below) will now spend the summer sculpting his squad so that they can compete in the first division against the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

Gzira United

Gzira, who are the home team for Tipbet’s Malta office, also had a successful season as they finished third in the Maltese Premier League to secure a place in the preliminary Europa League qualifiers. This rewarded a consistent showing from the Maroons as they won 15 of their 26 matches and lost just five times, which left them seven points off the champions Valletta.

PAS Giannina

PAS Giannina are one of three Greek football teams that are sponsored by Tipbet to mark the company’s expansion into the country’s market following the award of a license. They play in the top division, the Superleague Greece, which was won by AEK Athens.

Giannina finished in the solid mid-table position of ninth with their 13 draws too many to mount a realistic challenge for the European places, though relegation was never a possibility and turning their stalemates into wins will be the target for 2018/19.

Apollon Pontou FC

Having been formed in 1926, Apollon Pontou FC are a Greek club steeped in history. Based in the city of Thessaloniki they play in the Football League, which is the second tier of competition, and are currently in seventh place after 31 games.

The fact that they have lost just eight times proves that they have a solid base to build one for next season, though Dimitris Kalaitzidis will need to improve his team’s attack if they are to challenge for promotion again.

Iraklis FC 1908

Iraklis FC 1908 are also from Thessaloniki and they have gained promotion to the Football League from the Gamma Ethniki with two games to spare. In the regular season the Elder topped Group 2 to take them to the promotion play-offs.

Having won all four fixtures so far, they will finish at least second and, therefore, can start planning for the second division following some outstanding performances.
