A stunning and somewhat surprising first-half performance saw Liverpool outplay Manchester City and record a 3-0 win at Anfield last night in the Champions League quarter-final first-leg.
The home side started exuberantly and took the lead on 12 minutes when Mo Salah coolly converted his 38th goal of the season from close range. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – impressive in central midfield – then added a stunning second from distance, before Sadio Mane’s header made it 3-0 on 31 minutes.
With a big lead, the Reds’ attention then turned to keeping a clean sheet and stopping City getting an away goal – which they duly did.
Salah had to leave the pitch with an injury, though, and is now surely a doubt for next week’s return leg at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola will be disappointed by him team’s display; not least in the fact that they failed to record a shot on target for the first time this season.
It will now take a monumental effort for the Blues to advance to the semi-finals.
In the other fixture last night, Barcelona are in control of their tie having won 4-1 against Roma.
