The off season has been one of real ambition for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp has had money to spend, with Alisson Becker joining from Roma for a record goalkeeping fee of over €70m and following moves for Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri. Therefore, the Reds have their strongest side in years and must now challenge for the Premier League with their German manager yet to claim silverware since arriving almost three years ago.

They did, of course, reach the Champions League final last season but were outplayed by Real Madrid; the signings that have been made thus far are certainly on the way to bridging the gulf in quality, however. Klopp will be missing some of his big-hitters when they head to the United States for the International Champions Cup – including Brazilian Roberto Firmino – but they will have Sadio Mane and Mo Salah, both of whom exited the World Cup at the group stage.

Their opener Stateside is against the German manager’s former employers Borussia Dortmund, with the two sides meeting in North Carolina for the first time since their 2016 Europa League semi-final, which ended 5-4 to the Reds on aggregate.

Borussia have also boosted their squad ahead of the new season with Abdou Diallo, acquired from Mainz, their most major piece of business – the 22-year-old is a highly-rated defender. It will be interesting to see what changes Lucien Favre makes after taking over from Peter Stöger – the former Nice boss will be expected to challenge Bayern Munich for the title, with their last league win coming in 2012.
