This is the first time that Liverpool have been in the Champions League knockout stage since the 2008/09 season, when they were quarter-finalists, and being drawn against FC Porto means that they have a great opportunity to once again reach the last-eight. With the first-leg taking place at the Estádio do Dragão, it is very much in the Reds’ hands to take a giant step towards qualification.

They have one of the most fearsome attacks on the continent and Jurgen Klopp will know that scoring and avoiding defeat on Wednesday is the aim. In Mo Salah, Liverpool boast one of the finest players in the world on current form, and the Egyptian forward is already on 29 goals for the campaign in all competitions.

Roberto Firmino also has 20, so it would be a surprise to see a lack of away goals be the reason for elimination; indeed, any struggles could well be of the club’s own doing due to their shaky defence. Virgil van Dijk is likely to feature on Wednesday night as he makes his Champions League debut for his new club, having joined from Southampton in January, and will be tasked with helping to ensure a clean sheet.

Liverpool have been in strong Premier League form – their draw with Tottenham Hotspur was sandwiched in-between wins over Huddersfield Town and Southampton – to leave them in third and just two points off Manchester United.

Porto, in contrast, are two points clear in the Primeira Liga with a game in hand and are on course to claim their first league title in five years as they are unbeaten after 21 matches. That has not disrupted their Champions League showings, however, which have been impressive to this point, and they emerged from Group G in second against three tricky opponents.

Given their table-topping domestic form, Porto will undoubtedly be tough opponents for Liverpool. Nonetheless, Tipbet’s odds rate Liverpool as favourites to win the first-leg (2.35) as well as advancing into the quarters. Porto really need a strong result to take to Anfield and are 3.10 to win on Wednesday, with a draw 3.45. Plenty of other markets to choose from.
