Arsenal travel to Southampton looking to keep their slim hopes of a top four berth alive after beating Manchester United 2-0 at the weekend. In fifth, this is their game in hand to overtake the Red Devils and go three points behind Manchester City with three games to play. The north Londoners have had a hugely disappointing campaign after the optimism of pre-season, losing nine times and suffering the ignominy of another last-16 Champions League exit.

With Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez both out of contract next summer, even a strong end to the campaign may not be enough to convince both to agree improved terms. This, along with the uncertainty over Arsene Wenger’s future, would make preparing for another assault on the Premier League in 17/18 even trickier. This could be further complicated by playing Europa League football next term: as United and Jose Mourinho have discovered, playing matches on Thursdays and then Sundays can have a draining effect on even the deepest squads.

For Southampton, Wednesday night’s hosts, Claude Puel’s first year in charge has been acceptable if unspectacular. A win in their game in hand could see them as high as eighth, though there is then a big gap between the division’s leading teams, while an EFL Cup final defeat to United, in which they were the dominant team, shows that their French manager has a good potential to work with.

During his playing days, Puel was a midfielder under Wenger at Monaco and he showed, on the way to the cup final, that he has the capabilities to outfox his old boss in management – the Saints won 2-0 at the Emirates in the last eight of the competition. Arsenal did beat them in the league, however, and won 5-0 at St Mary’s in the fourth round of the FA Cup, a competition that the Gunners are now finalists in once more, and can become the most successful side in the competition’s history when they play Chelsea.

With Arsenal having more to play for, Tipbet have them at 2.05 to get three points and move into fifth. With games running out, there is very little margin for error and the visitors will likely need to win their remaining games to stand a chance of the top four. Southampton can be backed at 3.60, though they are winless in four. All 102 markets for this midweek Premier League game can be viewed here.
